Glass Railings: Essential Insights You Need to Know

Line load requirements for railings:

Railings have specific requirements in Europe about how strong they should be. One important requirement is "Line load requirements." This requirement is expressed in kN/m and means how much horizontal loads, or push, a railing can handle for each meter of its upper edge.

For example, if a length of railing is 3 meters and it is pushed the upper edge with a force of 3 kN (which is like 300 kg), it's like the railing is dealing with 1 kN/m of force. These requirements help classify how strong railings should be. Line loads are classified into the following categories:

0.5 kN/m – railings in living spaces
1 kN/m – railings in public spaces
2 kN/m - railings can be used both: in living and public spaces
3 kN/m – railings are suitable for areas with higher safety requirements or heavier usage (commercial buildings and public spaces)

Types of glass railings:

Glass railings can be divided into several categories:

1) Frameless glass railings
  • Fixed with a bottom profile
  • Point-fixed
2) Glass railings with posts

Frameless glass railings receive the entire load, therefore, there must be used a thicker glass compared to railings with posts.

Typically, for glass railings with a bottom profile:
  • in residential areas (0.5 kN/m) is used tempered-laminated glass of 6+6 mm;
  • in public spaces (1 kN/m) is used tempered-laminated glass of it's 6+6 mm or 8+8 mm;
  • for stadium stands (3 kN/m),is used tempered-laminated glass of 10+10 mm or 12+12 mm.
Advising on the appropriate glass thickness for a point-fixed glass railing is more challenging because of various factors beyond just the operating load. There must be consider also the horizontal and vertical spacing between fixing points. Moreover, with point fixing, it's important to note that the fixing apertures in the glass weaken it, as stress concentrates around these openings.

Nevertheless, it can be conlcuded that in living spaces (0.5 kN/m) tempered-laminated glass of a thickness of 8 +8 mm and in public spaces (1 kN/m) of 10 +10 mm could be used. In rooms intended for public gathering (3 kN/m) it is not possible to use a point fixed glass the glass pane in the event of a risk of falling.
Suitable point fixings for frameless glass railings:

There are common suggestions how to use point fixing for frameless glass railings. The diameter of point fixings that are used for a frameless glass railing is between 45 mm and 60 mm. Your should keep in mind that smaller point fixing you use, it stress will be generated around the apertures, which may break the glass.

Each pair of point fixings should be spaced no more than 0.5 meters apart horizontally, ensuring a minimum of 4 fixings per meter.

The vertical spacing between upper and lower point fixings should be at least 120 mm from center to center. However, a greater vertical distance enhances the railing's to withststand the load. The distance between the point fixing and the edge of the glass should be at least x2 times the glass thickness, and x6 times the glass thickness at glass corners.

A typical railing is in the price range between 150 to 300 EUR per running meter if the standard height from floor is 1100 mm.
We provide an extensive railings catalog of models and specifications.
There are several things that affect the price.
1) Railings design;
For example, frameless glass railings with spigots are more affordable than frameless glass railings with 3kn/m.
2) Material of railings;
Stainless steel is more expensive than steel or aluminum, but aluminum and stainless steel are corrosion free in comparison with steel.
3) Technical specifications.
  • Height of the module or height from floor;
  • Length of the total amount of railings;
  • Glass thickness (if order includes a glass)
  • Type of glass (if order includes a glass)

To make the process faster, include your dimensions (length, type of mounting, height from floor or height of the module) and design preferences in your inquiry, and attach any *.dwg files or hand-drawings if available. We're here to help you find the perfect railing solution efficiently.
